What Things you should consider before you obtain a lawyer

When you need to obtain a lawyer you want one who has an area of expertise in the field of which you need legal representation.

When you start your search for a lawyer you may wonder why there are so many out there. Well just like Doctors there are fields in which one would specialize. An analogy of that would be going to a foot doctor to treat your chronic heartburn. Same thing with a lawyer you would go to a lawyer whose area of expertise is in criminal law for an assault case.

If your case is not as serious as something is like malpractice or auto injury you may have a case for small claims court. Now dont be embarrassed if youre not sure.
Not everyone knows which is the best angle to handle his or her case. If they did there would be no need for a consultation. This is usually a free sit down or over the phone meeting with a lawyer. They are the experts on the law and would know better if you were truly in need of legal representation. If you have a case that is best handled by a lawyer they then will discuss your options.
How much you are going to need to pay them. Some lawyers charge hourly and others will work on a flat rate. Either way you should be prepared to pay a retainer fee.

Not all lawyers expect clients to pay cash up front or on an hourly basis. When you have a case that involves something as serious as medical malpractice or auto accident leaving you disabled these can be paid by contingency. The only price you pay is a percentage of the amount you win in your case. The lawyer will deduct their fees from your settlement before the check is awarded to you. This is usually about a third of your award.

Most people never anticipate being involved in a lawsuit so it is not something you have pre set money set aside for.
So why would you throw it away on any lawyer? Just because they seem reputable doesnt mean they are. You should be prepared to ask questions of your own. A distinguished lawyer will be prepared to answer all the questions you have even if you might not think they are important. If they are good they will have records of their experience and success rate. That should be some tools to help you feel more confident about who is representing you.

Being involved in a lawsuit is not a laughing matter. You need to do your homework and chose a lawyer who is right for your situation.

This is your money and/or reputation at stake. Dont make the mistake of taking on someone who isnt going to do all they can to win your case.
